What Our Light Installation Work Covers

Lighting shapes a room more than almost anything else we install, so it's worth getting right. Our scope covers:

  • Downlights, LED retrofits included, for kitchens, living areas and hallways
  • Pendant and feature lighting, wired and hung properly, not just screwed to a hook
  • Dimmer switches, matched to the globe type actually fitted
  • Outdoor and security lighting, sensor-triggered or always-on
  • Garden and landscape lighting, run on weatherproof cable and fittings
  • Ceiling roses and period fittings, rewired safely without losing the look

Where the room calls for it, we reach for Beacon Lighting and SAL fittings rather than a generic import that fades or yellows within a year or two.

We also handle the small extras that finish a lighting job properly: motion sensors on outdoor lights, smart-home compatible switching, and matching plate finishes across a whole room rather than a mismatched mix.

Six Signs Your Home Is Asking for Light Installation

A lighting problem rarely stays small for long, and a few signs make it obvious it's time to call.

  • A fitting flickers, buzzes, or dims without a dimmer switch involved
  • You're still running old halogen downlights that run hot and cost more to run
  • A room feels dark no matter how many lamps you add
  • A pendant or fitting has come loose from the ceiling
  • You want outdoor lighting for security or entertaining
  • A switch feels warm or the light won't turn off properly

Flickering lights are one of the most common calls we take, and they're rarely just the globe.

Old halogen downlights deserve a special mention. They run noticeably hotter than an LED equivalent, push your power bill up for the same amount of light, and tend to fail in clusters as they age together.

Light Installation in Ashfield Homes

Ashfield's mix of Federation cottages and mid-century flats means lighting jobs here fall into two camps. Older houses often still carry a single central light per room, wired for a era when lamps did the rest of the work.

Retrofitting downlights or feature lighting into a ceiling like that takes care, particularly where the roof space is tight or the ceiling itself is original. We work with what's there rather than against it.

The newer low-rise blocks scattered through the suburb bring a different job: modern boards but dated fittings from whenever the building was last touched up, ready for an LED upgrade.

We're also called out to older interwar apartment buildings with decorative plaster ceilings still intact from when they were first fitted out. The rose is worth keeping; the wiring feeding it usually isn't.

Renovation Timing for Lighting

Lighting is one of the last trades in on a renovation, but it should be planned early. Once plaster and paint are done, moving a downlight means patching a ceiling that was just finished.

The right time to lock in a lighting layout is before the ceiling closes up, whether that's a full reno or just a single room refresh. We're happy to walk through a layout with you at framing stage rather than after the fact.

For a straight fitting swap with no other work involved, none of this matters. It only becomes relevant once walls or ceilings are actually open.

What Affects the Cost of Light Installation

Every lighting quote is fixed in writing before we start, so what you're told is what you pay. A few things shift the number:

  • Number of fittings being installed or replaced
  • Fitting type, from a simple downlight to a hardwired pendant or chandelier
  • Access, particularly roof space height and how the existing wiring runs
  • Switching required, such as adding a dimmer or multiple switch points
  • Any rewiring needed if the existing circuit isn't up to the job

Quotes cost nothing to get, and new customers take $50 off the invoice.

What Usually Gets Booked Alongside Lighting

Lighting rarely goes in on its own once a room's being touched up. A handful of pairings show up on repeat.

  • Ceiling fans, especially where a room already needs the ceiling opened
  • Extra power points, for lamps or appliances the new layout calls for
  • A safety switch check, if the existing circuit hasn't had one added yet
  • Dimmer and smart switching, bundled in while the wall plate is already off

Booking these together usually costs less overall than three separate visits, since access and isolation only happen once.

Our Light Installation Process, Start to Finish

Lighting jobs move quickly once we're on site.

  1. We confirm the fittings and layout you're after.
  2. We send through a fixed price before any switch gets touched.
  3. We run cable and fit the lights, keeping mess to a minimum.
  4. We test everything and clean up before we leave.

A handful of downlights is usually done inside half a day. A complete room re-light with new switching stretches closer to a full one.

The Rules That Apply in NSW

Lighting circuits sit under AS/NZS 3000 the same as any other electrical work, covering cable sizing, insulation clearance around downlights, and safe switching. Fitting your own lights isn't a legal option in this state, no matter how simple the swap looks from below the ceiling.

Notifiable lighting work gets a Certificate of Compliance lodged once it's finished. That paperwork matters if you ever sell or make an insurance claim.

Where an older ceiling has no existing safety switch on the lighting circuit, we'll flag it. Fitting one is cheap protection against a fault becoming something worse.

The Difference on a Light Installation Job

A lighting job is easy to rush, and easy to get wrong in ways that only show up months later as a flickering fitting or a hot switch. We take the time to get the wiring right, not just the fitting on show.

Beacon Lighting and SAL gear feature heavily in what we install, chosen because they hold their finish and their function years after a cheaper import has faded.

If we've already been out for your board or your points, the same faces turn up for the lighting too. Nobody has to explain the house twice to a stranger.

Servicing Ashfield and the Suburbs Around It

We regularly fit lighting across Ashfield and into Summer Hill, Dulwich Hill and Petersham. Lighting jobs often pair well with ceiling fan installation or a switchboard upgrade where the circuit needs more headroom first.

Common questions

Your Light Installation FAQs

Straight answers to what people ask before booking a lighting job.

Can lighting be done without turning off power all day?

Yes. We isolate the lighting circuit involved and the rest of your home stays running while we work.

Do you offer light installation in Ashfield on weekends?

Weekdays cover our standard bookings. Anything urgent outside that hours goes through our emergency line.

Do you handle strata or apartment light installation in Ashfield?

We do, including common-area lighting and in-unit fittings. We work with strata managers directly where a job needs sign-off.

Will I get a Certificate of Compliance?

On any notifiable lighting work, yes. It's lodged with NSW Fair Trading and kept on file for you too.

Can you do light installation in older homes?

Regularly. Period ceilings and older circuits both need a careful approach, and it's a routine part of our week.

What are the signs I need light installation?

Flickering, dimming, or a fitting that's simply given up are the usual triggers. A dated fitting that no longer suits the room counts too.
